Six Things That You Shouldn't Assume When It Comes To Wine Tasting

Blog

If you're going to be doing some wine tasting, it's important to be well informed to maximize the enjoyment you get from the experience. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there regarding wine tasting.

The following are six things that you shouldn't assume when it comes to wine tasting.

Red wine is never consumed chilled

A lot of novice wine tasters think that red wine is never consumed chilled. However, this isn't the case. Certain red wines such as Pinot noir and Beaujolais are actually commonly served chilled or slightly chilled.

It's always best to age wine

Not every type of wine improves with age. In fact, only a limited number of wines are aged to improve their quality. The majority of wines out there are made to be consumed within only a few years of being bottled.

You always need to decant red wine

The only reason why you would want to decant a red wine is that there is sediment in it. If you're drinking red wine that is completely free from sediment, decanting this wine won't have any benefit.

Wine has to come from a bottle with a cork for it to be high quality

Although wine traditionally comes in a bottle with a cork, screwcaps are becoming increasingly popular these days. In fact, screwcaps are even becoming mainstream in many wine-producing areas.

It's important to understand that screwcaps are not an indication of inferior wine. Screwcaps can work just as well as corks when it comes to maintaining the quality of wine that's being stored.

You won't get a hangover if you choose white wine

Red wine has a much worse reputation for causing hangovers than white wine. However, this by no means indicates that you can't get a hangover from drinking white wine. Hangovers are caused by alcohol more than anything, and of course, both red and white wine contain plenty of alcohol.

Although substances such as tannins in red wine are associated with hangover headaches, white wine also has tannins and plenty of other ingredients that can cause headaches. For example, white wine contains sulfites that are also associated with hangover headaches.

Expensive wine always tastes better than low-cost wine

You shouldn't automatically turn your nose up at a more affordable wine. When it comes to discovering which wines you like, it never helps to look at price tags.

There is a lot of personal preference to consider when it comes to finding your favorite wines. You might be surprised to find that some of your favorite wines are fairly inexpensive, so try everything regardless of any preconceived notions about price or type.

don't struggle with party menus - hire a food service

Party planning is not my forte. I can do a lot of things, but putting together an event of any kind is not one of them. When it is my turn to host the family gatherings or put together a birthday party for my kids, I always struggled with the menu. I never knew what to serve my guests, so I started looking into hiring a catering service to prepare the food for me. After I eliminated the menu problems, planning parties became much easier. There are so many options of food services to use, so I created my blog to help others that share my lack of menu planning abilities get through their party planning a little easier.
